Here you can choose between two distances – the full 42 km marathon from Maloja to S-chanf or the popular 21 km half marathon from Maloja to Pontresina.

Whether you want to challenge yourself over the full distance or enjoy a shorter version, an unforgettable experience awaits on snow-sure trails with the magnificent scenery of the Alps as a backdrop. Both distances can be skied using either skate or classic technique, making the Engadin Skimarathon a race for everyone.

Combine sport, nature, and community – and discover why the Engadin Skimarathon is one of the world's most popular cross-country skiing events.

The Engadin Skimarathon is one of my absolute favorite races. As Central Europe's largest cross-country skiing marathon and the second largest in the world, it holds a unique place both in the skiing world and in my heart. Since 1969, thousands of skiers have gathered in the scenic Engadin Valley to ski the classic 42 km route from Maloja to S-chanf. What makes the Engadin Skimarathon so special to me is the combination of classic skiing and skate skiing, the snow-sure trails, the genuine atmosphere, and the magnificent alpine views.

Here, the world's elite and recreational skiers from more than 60 countries come together in a community that makes the race much more than just a competition. During the popular marathon week, there are also several other races: the Engadin Half Marathon, the Engadin Women's Race, the Engadin Night Race, and the Youth Sprint—creating a whole festival for everyone who loves cross-country skiing.

Engadin Skimarathon – The story behind Central Europe's largest cross-country ski race

The Engadin Skimarathon is now known as Central Europe's largest cross-country skiing event and the second largest in the world. Since the first edition in 1969, when 945 skiers lined up at the starting line in the scenic Engadin Valley, the race has grown into an international event that attracts over 13,000 participants from more than 60 countries every year.

As early as 1976, the 10,000 participant mark was surpassed, and since then, the Engadin Skimarathon has cemented its position as one of the most sought-after cross-country skiing competitions in Europe. The anniversary year of 2018 set a new record when 14,200 skiers registered – which meant that registration was closed in advance.

What makes the Engadin Skimarathon unique is the combination of classic skiing and skate skiing, which gives both elite skiers and recreational skiers the opportunity to experience the snow-sure trails through the Engadin Valley – from the start in Maloja to the finish in S-chanf if you are skiing the 42 km race. Or to Pontresina if you are skiing the 21 km race. Here, magnificent alpine views, perfectly groomed ski trails, and an atmosphere that transforms the race into more than just a competition come together – it's a winter festival for the entire region.
