Engadin La Diagonela – from vision to international cross-country skiing classic
Engadin La Diagonela was born out of a vision to boost tourism in the Engadin Valley in January, a month that had long lacked major events. Leading figures from sports, politics, and tourism joined forces and created a classic-style cross-country race to put Engadin on the cross-country skiing map. When Jizérska Padesàtka was canceled in 2014 due to a lack of snow, the organization seized the opportunity and quickly managed to organize a race that gained international significance.
Since then, Engadin La Diagonela has grown into one of Switzerland's most popular winter cross-country races, where the world's elite meet passionate amateurs in a magnificent setting. The race is still characterized by the same core values as when it started: ambition, community, and an unforgettable sporting experience in the heart of the Alps. La Diagonela – 55 km classic long-distance race
La Diagonela 55 km is the main race in Engadin and the most prestigious of the competitions. The race starts in Pontresina, from where the skiers follow a scenic route that combines open alpine meadows, frozen marshes, and historic villages. The route takes participants via Samedan and Celerina, past Lake St. Moritz, and into the magnificent Val Rosegg, where nature shows itself at its most spectacular in winter. Professional skiers say that the toughest part of the race is when you have passed the clubhouse at the Zuoz golf course and have about 10 km left.
After approximately 50 kilometers of challenging classic skiing, the finish line awaits in the charming village of Zuoz, where spectators, tradition, and alpine culture greet the skiers. Thanks to several start groups, both elite and recreational skiers are provided with the right conditions for their experience. This combination of high altitude, guaranteed snow, Swiss precision, and genuine alpine village culture makes La Diagonela 55 km one of the world's most unique long-distance races.
