Svalbard Ski Marathon – the world’s northernmost ski race
Standing at the starting line of the Svalbard Ski Marathon is an experience that stays with you for a long time. This isn’t just a race—it’s an unforgettable Arctic adventure where the power of nature truly makes its presence felt. Surrounded by glaciers, snow-capped mountains, and the magical midnight sun, a skiing experience awaits that touches both body and soul. Moreover, a sense of stillness and presence emerges that only the Arctic can offer—where every pole stroke feels meaningful.
Since its inception in 1993, the Svalbard Ski Marathon has grown to become the largest annual event on the archipelago. The race is held in classic style and offers both a challenging full marathon of 42 km and a more accessible half marathon of 21 km. Participating at 78 degrees north, with an elevation difference of approximately 400 meters, is an achievement in itself. At the same time, the magnificent surroundings are the real reward – untouched nature, sparkling snow, and the intense light of spring make the experience completely unique.

Important information regarding Barentsburg and Pyramiden
Barentsburg and Pyramiden have long been popular destinations for visitors to Svalbard, largely due to their fascinating historical settings. However, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, all local event and travel organizers in Svalbard have decided to boycott these Russian-owned destinations.
This decision is based on a shared commitment to peace, human rights, and respect for the values of the local community. Sportivo Travel fully supports this stance and therefore does not offer any excursions, trips, or collaborations that include Barentsburg, Pyramiden, or other Russian-owned interests.
Instead, we focus on creating sustainable and meaningful experiences in Svalbard – based in Longyearbyen and in collaboration with Norwegian partners who share our values. Here you will find magnificent nature, unique encounters with the Arctic, and genuine northern hospitality.
Safety first in Svalbard
Safety is our top priority on this trip to Svalbard. The Arctic wilderness is magnificent but also unpredictable, and the danger posed by polar bears is very real. That is why the race has one of the world's most rigorous safety plans:
Armed polar bear guards: Patrols of polar bear guards on snowmobiles, strategically positioned along the entire route, ensure your safety.
Helicopter inspection: The Governor of Svalbard and CHC conduct a helicopter inspection of the entire track length just before takeoff to confirm the safety of the track.
Snow and Avalanche Safety: The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) closely monitors snow conditions and avalanche safety.
These measures make the Svalbard Ski Marathon 2026 one of the world's most unique and well-supervised sporting events, where you can focus on skiing knowing that you are in safe hands.
